Shostakovich's birthday - September 25!


Dmitri Shostakovich would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Monday! In honor of the occasion, we will be doing a live radio interview on WKCR in New York - 89.9 FM or streaming live on the web at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/wkcr/

The BBC simulcast on NPR affiliates just last night had a segment on Shostakovich. They said in reaction to the disapproval of Stalin to his previous operas, that S encrypted his next works with his initials to exercise his dissidence to Stalin. Didn't realize that he died in 1975, but they didn't say if he ever defected to the West or if the apparatchik let him broadcast on Soviet networks & Radio Moscow.

I can't wait to hear your Shostakovich Trios/Arensky Trio CD when it comes out. (When do you think that will be???) And is the rumor true that Julie has been burying herself in Shostakovich and Arensky research so as to produce program notes for the new CD the way she did for the Mendelssohn Trio CD? If so, I wonder what Julie's take will be on the whole Volkov controversy....
