United's New Policy

While I like to travel as light as possible on the road, sometimes one checked bag doesn't do the trick for me. I discovered tonight that United Airlines is changing their policy on checked baggage. Apparently, travellers with domestic economy tickets who do not have status in their frequent flier program can only check one bag for free. The second checked bag will incur a fee of $25!!!! More details at:

United Airlines domestic baggage questions

What do you all think of this?

Donna,

Not a problem if you, Julie and Emily can agree that no more than one of you will take a second bag on any one trip. Then whoever checks a second bag on any trip can check it free in the name of Cello Bruskin. Not an ideal solution, but better than none of you being able to pack a second bag without paying the $25 highway robbery fee....

Possible options include...
-Upgrade to 1st Class and see how that pans out
-Take a bus or a train...choo-choo
-Rent one of those classy mini-jets if you hit the lottery
-Feign "status" with the airline by saying something like, "Do you know who WE are? We've played Carnegie Hall!" Then shake your CDs in their face. Can't promise it'll work, but it's worth a try:-)/...

Dear j.cee,

I doubt that most airline employees have even heard of Carnegie Hall, let alone know what it is. Keep in mind that it is airline employees who recently allowed a cello on a plane free of charge because its owner said that it was an oboe and oboes were listed in the airline book as being permissible free-of-charge carry-on objects.
