Travelling During Spring Break Season!

Last month, we ran into some interesting adventures on the road! Nobody expected a snowstorm at the end of March but it happened and our flights out to Michigan were cancelled. We were supposed to fly into Flint, MI and drive to Lansing, MI. We discovered this itinerary...ahem...glitch, the day before our trip so I immediately got on the phone with the airline's customer service line. Oh, boy. The next two hours were devoted to waiting and pleading with the airline's representatives. Because it was during spring break season, most of the flights out of the New York area were originally full already! Apparently, we were confirmed on a flight out of New York two days after our original outbound date, which would have made us a day late to our performance!!!!

In a frenzied panic, I had my husband help me look up bus and train options, while I researched car rental prices. In the end, we decided it was best to rent a SUV from New York City and drive 11 hours to East Lansing, MI. The drive itself wasn't too bad, actually, aside from a little messiness in the Greater New York area. The people in Lansing were grateful we actually made it because they had at least 2 other show cancellations that weekend!

Our travels after that went pretty smoothly. From Lansing, MI, we flew to Missouri, where we performed at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Then, we went to on Denver, CO and performed in Lakewood, just outside of Denver.

This is what Denver airport looks like during spring break season. Eek.

Tim Hoffman, the Theater Production Coordinator at the Lakewood Cultural Center, managed to snap a good action shots of us in concert:

The varying climate extremes make any touring difficult from Nov. thru April. Summertime has its own hazzards with tropical storms & tornadoes. It sounds like you're learning to navigate the wrath of nature's fury. It seems that the tour schedules for chamber music seasons work differently than the tradition of craming in a tour bus and covering the country in support of an album. Entertainers of yesteryear have proven that the latter option can take it's toll on the stability of a normal lifestyle. Assign Kai Yu as your Tour Logistics Mgr. and you'll be good to go :-)/...
